Turkish Coffee Readings
My first sips of coffee were as a little girl, much too young to be drinking it, I'm sure. My grandmother would brew it on the stove, teaching me how to measure out the proper amount of water, grinds and sugar, when to stir, how to gauge the right temperature, and finally how to pour the brew into our tiny cups. We'd sip, we'd talk, and laugh at all the grinds stuck in my teeth. I always made sure to exaggerate that part, since her laugh was one of my favourite sounds. Then we'd flip our cups over and wait. That was the hard part. Waiting to know.
Waiting to find out what wisdom and fortune was to be read. Even as a small child, I loved hearing what was to come, even if it was no more than friends coming to visit, and a letter in the mail that would make me happy. As I grew older, the readings matured too. I miss those times. Sitting with my grandmother, listening to her tell me - and everyone else who went to her for a reading - of what was to come. What she didn't tell me though was that I would one day carry on her tradition, the tradition of reading Turkish Coffee, as she learned back in her village as a girl, in Cyprus. My father also learned from her, and reads cups when we ask him to. Tradition is important, it is part of who we are. Our culture, our heritage, our special pieces that make the puzzle fit together. And I'd love to share my family's tradition with you.
