Oracle cards can be used in many different ways, depending on your needs and personal intuitive style.
Make sure you clear your cards beforehand, and you can find out how to do that here.
When they're ready, sit with them and find your centre. Take a few deep breaths and come fully into the present moment, your body, your awareness. Now begin shuffling.
I like to hold them in my non-dominant hand, and shuffle them into my palm with the other one. You can form a question in your mind and hold it as you do, silently or aloud, and you can also simply ask that they tell you whatever it is you need to know. There are many different types of questions you can ask, and I'll go into greater detail with that when discussing spreads.
With a question in your mind, start paying attention to when you feel that intuitive nudge to either stop shuffling and lay out some cards, or to now split the deck a few times and then re-stack it. This is entirely up to you, and there is certainly no wrong way to go about it. If you're reading for someone else, you may like to have them shuffle or split the deck. Discover your own preference and style.
Now it's time to lay out the cards!
The type of question asked, and type of information requested, will determine the spread you should use.
Here are some common examples, based on the three categories most asked about - health, wealth and love. These questions and spreads are great especially when first starting out, yet excellent for any level of experience:
Once you know what your question is, it's time to choose a spread. Remember to let your intuition lead this part of the reading as well. Trust yourself when deciding.
The One Card Spread is good for yes or no answers, a firm peek into the issue, or a quick message you need to hear.
The Three Card Spread is good option for past, present and future types of readings. You can also use it to show body, mind and spirit, or anything else you choose to assign to the card positions. Make it your own.
In staying with the theme of health, wealth and love, here are some examples of spreads you can use for those types of queries. Again, remember that it's ok to customize them in any way you feel to do.
And of course, there is also the traditional Celtic Cross Spread that you may wish to use. It can be done with either tarot or oracle cards - whichever are calling you!
There is much to be learned about the tarot. It can be a lifelong study, with many depths and possibilities. Don't let that intimidate you and hold you back from diving in and working with the cards right now, from wherever you are in your understanding of it. Like most everything else, it's through practice that it is best learned and applied.
Here is a little chart on the tarot suit meanings to get you started.
Give it a try, and please let me know how your readings turn out!
