Glad you asked. .
Many people don't know that when you get a new deck of tarot or oracle cards, there are a few things you should do before ever using them.
First, you're going to want to clear them. Cards are energy transmitters, and therefore, a whole stack of sponges too. They've been through many hands before reaching yours, in the production process as well as the store you bought them from. All of that energetic chaos will definitely affect how they're able to work for you, so clear it out and make them yours.
A few ways.
The easiest method and most common is to knock on them. Hold the whole deck into your non-dominant hand and knock three times on the top card with your other hand.
Some people prefer to blow on them, and you can also smudge them, or even burry them.
From there, I always hold them to my heart and offer an intention/prayer, consecrating them sacred and for the highest good of all. You can personalize this anyway you choose.
And then I suggest that you introduce yourself to each individual card. Go through them one at a time and really look at them. Connect with them, and allow your energies to blend.
My cards are my trusted advisors and I like to care for them and respect them as such. They never fail me, and we have developed quite a kinship. Just like with any other relationship, your bond grows with love. They'll teach you and guide you and I think that is pretty incredible.
Congrats on your new deck. May you share an enlightening friendship.
--Oh, and it's a good idea to clear your cards as you go too. Whenever someone else has touched them, after a particularly heavy energy reading, if they've been in an environment that is less than desirable, if the messages don't seem to be accurate..when in doubt, knock.
